IC Bahamas Participates in 6 Nations Trophy in Prague
The IC of the Czech Republic event was a friendly competition among 6 nations this year: Australia, The Bahamas, Czech Republic, Hungary, Uruguay and the United States of America. It was the largest such event in Czech Republic IC history with nearly 70 players participating. As such, we played timed doubles matches of one hour each. On the first day of competition we mostly competed as country teams. On the second, we mixed up with players from other countries in the best tradition of the IC motto, "Hand across the net, friendship across the ocean". In addition to the tennis play and the IC Dinner, the Czech IC organized a trip to Karlštejn Castle located to the southwest of Prague.
The city was delightful. If you like beer, bread, sausages, meat and potatoes, you would have been in heaven. There were some very good wines and other culinary treats, but the beer really stood out. We made use of Prague's excellent transportation system of trams and trains and was surprised by the availability of very fast free Internet WiFi virtually everywhere. We were able to spent a couple of days sightseeing and went to Prague castle, walked the Charles Bridge and took in a concert played by members of the Prague National Orchestra and held in the house where much of the film “Amadeus” was shot. How lovely to listen to Mozart’s music in such a beautiful setting.
In the end, our team from the Bahamas managed to come in 5th, beating out the USA who finished last. Australia was the winner this year with Uruguay, Czech Republic and Hungary coming in 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. We left with heartfelt goodbyes and promises to meet again soon!
And then it was on to Vienna to meet up with our friends of the Austrian IC. Peter Lund, Honorary Secretary, had invited us and the Uruguians to come visit them after the 6 Nations event. How could we refuse!?
