IC Doubles Week Competition (2011)

Congratulations to the IC of Great Britain on winning the Société Générale Private Banking Trophy.

If you look at the pictures of on- and off-court activity on our website, I think you will agree that everyone who came was a winner. On court, many matches were close, won 3-2 with a third set 10-point tie break being the only difference between winning and losing. The Bahamas finished fourth, losing 3-2 to Austria for a place in the final. This was after being 2-1 up and losing both mixed doubles in third set 10-point ties breaks, 10-8 and 10-7.  Such was the closeness of many matches. We think the round robin format and the mix of both men and women on the same team made for great camaraderie and a good ambience all round.

However, it was probably the off-court activities that made this event special. These are captured in pictures and video clips on the website if you click through to the appropriate links. You can see a video of IC participants dancing the merengue and a wonderfully entertaining limbo act at the final night banquet dinner.  At this evening, it was great to see the teams joining in with their own ‘entertainments’.  This included a song and dance routine of Singing in the Rain from Great Britain, an unforgettable version of Yellowbird by the Barbadians and a wonderful finale from the Austrians of a ‘Cuckoo Song’ that had everyone joining in.

Other highlights shown in the website pictures include ‘Tea at Government House’, visits to Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park and Ardastra Zoo & Gardens, golf at the beautiful Ocean Club course, a Bahamian cultural evening at the home of Edith & Craig Powell and several tennis matches and mix-ins with local clubs. In one of these, the British team played our top local juniors. It was Britain’s only loss of the week -- a great experience and bragging rights for our juniors!

I thank everyone who came for making it a great week, our sponsors for making it economically possible and, of course, our many volunteers who put tremendous effort into making this week an enjoyable reality.

Kit Spencer (President)
