The Bahamas IC Tennis Camp - May 2016
The Bahamas IC recently hosted a tennis camp in the Lyford Cay residential community and several families were gracious enough to allow us to use their private courts. Without their cooperation, it would not have been possible to hold an event of this size.
The camp was by invitation only with the original intention of focusing on the islands' top 12 and under junior players. We were successful in attracting and including a total of 16 of those players, both boys and girls and thereby filling 4 courts! Jim Lavender, a past tour player and college tennis coach from the US, was in charge of the camp and had several of Nassau's top 16 and over tennis players supporting him. Jim had met some of these players in Nassau where he was training with his daughter who plays on the WTA tour and several came under his guidance subsequently following him to Turkey and Greece where they played tournaments in their quest to accumulate enough points to qualify for the tour. Jim now coaches Iesha Holton, a WTA tour player who also came to Nassau and helped with the camp.
The Bahamian pro's included P.J. Major, Josh Turnquest, Michael Cooper, and Iesha Sheppard. We had Justin Cohen (formerly Lleyton Hewitt's manager during the period when Lleyton was ranked number 1 in the world and who now manages Adam Scott) come in at the beginning of a practice session and speak to the kids about competitive sport and tennis. On Friday, tennis was from 3:30 - 6pm followed by a well attended pizza party. All in all the camp was very well received and the kids behaved beautifully. Many people are asking when this can be done again. The cost was $300 for the week and, after expenses, the money has gone to provide assistance towards the costs of training our Bahamian junior players.
A huge thank you to Neil Mactaggart for organizing this event with hopes that more events for our Bahamian juniors can be held in the future!
